For months now, Christian has been telling anyone who would listen that he deserves “one more match” for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, in light of the numerous setbacks he has suffered at the hands of Sheamus in recent weeks, perhaps the disgruntled Superstar should instead turn his focus to The Celtic Warrior – before there is nothing left of him to challenge a World Champion.

On the Sept. 9 edition of SmackDown, Sheamus emerged to ridicule Christian’s continued insistence that he deserves another title opportunity, calling him a “mangy dog” and ordering him out of the ring. When the angry Superstar returned to exact revenge during his Irish foe’s match, Sheamus nearly took him out with the Celtic Cross.

One week later, Christian & Wade Barrett lost a tag team match to Sheamus & Justin Gabriel. Although it was Gabriel who got the pin on Barrett, “The Great White” invited his fuming adversary back into the ring to finish things between them. Christian, a former two-time World Heavyweight Champion, would lose major ground in the eyes of those picking the No. 1 contender to the World Heavyweight Title by not rising to the challenge.

Two days later at Night of Champions, Sheamus interrupted yet another plea for “one more match,” blasting his complaining prey with an earth-shattering Brogue Kick. Although this may have made things beautiful in Buffalo for the WWE Universe, it continued to lower Christian’s appearance as a serious challenger for the World Title.

His descent was only hastened one day later on Raw SuperShow, when Sheamus’ Four-Man Tag Team reigned supreme over the team that included his irate adversary.

When Christian did finally get “one more match” against the newly-crowned World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry – a Lumberjack Match on the Sept. 23 edition of SmackDown – the first Irish-born WWE Champion was there to halt his escape one more time.

This led the outmatched challenger not only to get pinned by the enraged champion, but also suffer the devastating power of The World’s Strongest Slam.

It’s futile to assume that Christian’s constant rants for “one more match” have ended with his loss to Henry. However, before he goes down that road yet again, he might want to address the red-haired roadblock that continues to thwart his golden journey.

SOURCE: Some Calgarians might be disappointed Canadian pro wrestler Christian no longer holds the World Heavyweight Championship belt, WWE Smack Down’s highest prize, which he lost to Randy Orton at Summer Slam just over a week ago.

However, if that pay per view is any indication the upcoming Street Fight between Christian and Orton is going to be something any fan can get ecstatic about.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Calgary and putting on a great show for all my Canadian peeps,” Christian said when asked how he felt about coming back to perform on home soil. “It will be my first time there actually to perform since, I believe, before I got injured a year ago (when he tore his pectoral muscle and had to undergo surgery). So it’s been well over a year since I’ve even had a chance to compete in my home country, so it will be great to come back.”

Even though Christian is no longer the world heavyweight champ, he can still hold his head up high for the honour he’s held twice in the last few months.

“It felt great, obviously, when I first won the world championship. You know, it took me 17 years to finally win it, and I lost it in five days,” Christian said.

“When I had envisioned my first title reign in my mind, it was going to be a long one. Obviously, that didn’t happen, so it gave me extra motivation to get it back. After that happened, I looked at it like ‘well, I’m going to regain it, then at least I’ll be able to call myself the two-time world heavyweight champion’ and that’s what I’ve done.”

As proud as he is, Christian has always been vocal about his doubts in the legitimacy of Orton’s multiple reigns.

It was such a paranoia that, before his match against Orton at Money in the Bank, he had a lawyer re-write his contract for the event to include a stipulation that if Orton got disqualified, he would lose the belt, which doesn’t regularly happen in that type of loss.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that Teddy Long wanted Randy Orton to be the face of Smack Down, when I feel like it should be me,” Christian said.

“You know, I was having some problems getting proper refereeing as you saw at Capital Punishment, where my foot was clearly underneath the rope and the referee counted three anyway.

I just feel like the situations that Teddy Long had been putting me in, plus the incompetence of the referees, that I was kind of forced, that I didn’t have any choice but to do that.”

Christian’s resourcefulness ran out at Money in the Bank, and on Tuesday, he will be the challenger instead of the defending champion like he’d hoped.

Even though Orton won their last meeting, don’t count Christian out — he’s a seasoned extreme rules veteran.

“It’s not my first rodeo. I’ve competed in many matches like that before. TLC matches, ladder matches and things like that.”

Your last match was at Wrestlemania 27 when you successfully defended the World Heavyweight Title against Alberto Del Rio. At the time you didn’t know that was going to be your last match. But looking back now, how does it feel to end your career on a high note as The Heavyweight Champion at the biggest event of the year?

Looking back now I’d have to say it would be tough to top it as a retirement. And it made it less emotional since I didn’t know it would be my last match. In a perfect world wrestling Christian at a Wrestlemania in Canada would be the ideal retirement, but the one I had is nothing to sneeze at.

The last time we saw you in the WWE was in May when Christian won the World Heavyweight Title. Now Christian has been your best-friend throughout these years, tell me about being there as he won his first World Title. And what was the first thing you told him in the ring?

My retirement didn’t feel bittersweet because I got to watch him finally realize his dream and take the opportunity my retirement presented. I’ll keep what I told him for my next book.

Since your time out of the ring, have you been paying attention what’s been going on in the WWE? If so, tell me what you think of what’s been going on (CM Punk, Christian’s 2nd Title Reign, etc.).

I haven’t watched anything besides Christian’s stuff.

Finally, I ask this to all my interviewees. What have you been watching on TV lately?

Game of Thrones, and Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO. Modern Family. How I Met Your Mother, where Barney totally stole the use of awesomeness from Christian and I . (laughs)

Recently, former WWE Superstar Edge was interviewed by Arda Ocal and Jimmy Korderas, of The Score. In the interview, Edge spoke about a range of topics including having to retire, how long he felt he would have competed before he retired if he didn’t receive the unfortunate news, his work on the show ‘Haven’, the Hall of Fame and much more. He even shared a few stories including Christian as well as his thoughts on Christian’s rivalry with Randy Orton and in his opinion why it took so long for Christian to be considered a main event superstar. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

…I still loved getting in front of the audience, I still loved having matches. Especially when it was with guys [like] Ziggler, I really enjoyed working with Ziggler, which was my last match in Toronto, because he’s exciting, he’s young. I really thought I could help teach him things, to kinda help him step up to a next level, like guys did for me. Then on the horizon, the stuff with Christian, I knew that was looming, so I was excited about that and that’s a disappointment. But the way everything worked out and him basically kinda stepping into my slot, I think it worked out really cool. It would have been awesome if we could have teamed then eventually feuded and then gone from there. But it actually might have worked out even cooler.

…I guess one name that’s chantable is Christian, and you’re buddy now the World Heavyweight Champion, for a second time, you talked about this actually on the media call of Haven, since you’re retirement, his ascension and being there for him in that moment when he first won the title. Here’s my question to you though, in all honestly, because for guys like myself who have met him before and have talked to him, Jimmy Korderas as well, this is a long time coming for him to be in this main event spot. So, in your opinion, why has it taken so long and why did it take this unfortunate circumstance, for him to finally be propelled to a main event spot?

Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t know what the intangibles are, I don’t know what cosmic alignment needs to happen, for things to happen. I honestly don’t know. Some guys are given the golden ticket straight out of the shoot, for whatever reason, I don’t know, I really don’t. I liken him getting to the top along the lines of Bret, Shawn and guys who really had to pay their dues, they were never pegged to be ‘the guy’, they were never pegged to be World Champions, they did it through hard work, through busting their ass, having great matches and breaking through due to sheer talent, and I think that’s the route that it ending up happening for Christian. I think whether I had to retire or not, I think it was gonna happen, it probably would have gone through him and I going against each other, which would have been awesome. It just took a different path once I had to retire and probably a quicker path for him, which if any positives can be pulled out of the situation with my neck, it’s that. I couldn’t have been more happy to retire and that be the period on the end of the sentence, then that night in Tampa. That really made the whole thing feel really worth while and it felt like a great culmination to the while thing, for both of us.

And you have been watching Christian’s work as of late, what do you think? It seems like he’s really saying ‘hey, I told you so, I am this guy’, to a lot of people.

Yeah, you know it’s one of those deals like I remember there was a big uproar when he dropped the title so quick and everything, and I even remember Jericho texting me saying ‘What’s the deal?’ and I was like, look at the whole picture at the end of the story, we can’t comment yet, nobody knows. I kinda did, I knew where it was going and I thought ‘Man, this could be great’, because to me, I would rather be the number one heel than the number two babyface, that to me is a better place to be, especially with Christian’s talent at being heel. I knew where it was going and I was like ‘Okay, that’s pretty cool’ and there’s always gonna be armchair quarterbacks, where they go ‘oh man, I can’t believe that, that’s bull’. You don’t know where it’s going, you can say it’s bull eight months down the road, if it doesn’t pan out and it didn’t work that way. But that’s one of the great things about wrestling, you don’t know where it’s going and okay I understand that people are passionate and they enjoy it and they love to speculate on things like that, but you can’t fully say whether something’s working or not gonna work, or this or that if you don’t know the whole book. That’s one of the things that I always enjoyed about being a fan, I didn’t know where it was going, but I wanted to watch, to see where it did.

Be sure to check out the interview in full here. It’s a great interview and definitely not one to be missed! Huge thanks to Arda Ocal for passing it on.

You’ve been so busy with Haven I’m sure, but have you had any time to catch CM Punk’s story on RAW? Are you watching WWE programming these days?

I’ve kind of signed off on it for now. I’ve watched some of Christian’s stuff, Jay’s stuff. And that’s about it. I think it’s part of the “taking time away from it” process.

What do you think of Christian’s program? He’s won the World Heavyweight Title twice now.

Yeah, and that makes me really happy. He deserves it. And that will probably help shut up the naysayers and the critics who said he could do it or said he didn’t deserve it or whatever. And with him and Randy I knew the matches would just be awesome. Because you’ve got two guys who know their craft so well. So I knew from a performance standpoint it would be ridiculous. I knew that one thing that Jay and I really prided ourselves on was that no matter the story or no matter what the matches always had to be good. That was what people were going to take away from it. And then you’ve got a guy like Randy[Orton] who’s the same way. His matches always have to be good. So you get to guys like that, you know it’s going to be good. I’m really happy for him. I always knew he deserved it. I always knew that if he got the opportunity, he’d kick the door open. We were going down the route of him and I, so I think it would have happened whether I was still there or not. But I think me having to retire sped the process up and took the story a different way. Which I think actually played to his strength because he is such a great heel. But because he was doing such a great job as a babyface people might have forgotten that – How much fun he is to hate.

CHICAGO – If at first you don’t succeed, hire a legal team…and fight dirty.

That’s exactly what Christian did to help him finally regain the World Heavyweight Championship from Randy Orton.

During a tooth-and-nail battle that could have gone either way, Christian spit right in the face of the champion. The dastardly deed caused Orton to snap and deliver a blatant low blow to Christian. The move earned Orton an immediate disqualification. And, as per the special match stipulation put in place by Christian’s legal team, Orton lost his title.

Afterward, The Viper launched a brutal assault on the new champion, first smashing him in the head with a TV monitor, then RKO-ing him onto the announce table.

But that wasn’t enough for the furious WWE Apex Predator. As he walked away from the ring, he hesitated, then headed back to deliver one more vicious RKO to Christian onto the announce table for good measure.

Christian’s victory in Chicago was the culmination of a long, twisted road.

Although Christian captured his first World Championship in his 17-year career at Extreme Rules 2011, he lost it to Randy Orton just five days later. After that heart-breaking night, he mounted a relentless quest to regain the title. But the results were the same each time. At WWE Capitol Punishment and Over the Limit, Christian failed to dethrone Orton.

How will the seething Viper respond to being spit in the face and having his title taken from him all because of a contract clause? Can Christian hold onto the World Title for more than five days this time? Find out the next edition of SmackDown on Syfy at 8/7 CT.

The Grand Arena at GrandWest was packed to capacity last night as the WWE Superstars kicked off the Cape Town leg of their world tour bringing crowd favourites like Randy Orton and Kane to perform in front of a fanatical audience.

It wasn’t all fun and games, though: one wrestler, Christian, was particularly angry that his luggage had been broken into somewhere between the US and South Africa, and used some of his time in the ring to condemn SA.

“I step off a plane, my baggage is broken into – you rip off the locks and you steal my clothes,” he yelled at the crowd just before his loss to Orton in a heavyweight title bout.

“Is this what this country is all about? Then shame on you!”

The crowd jeered and booed at his comments and later cheered when he lost to Orton.

Other wrestlers showing off their athletic – or acting, depending on your attitude to the sport – skills last night included the 140kg Ezekiel Jackson, who emerged from behind a dark curtain and stalked to the ring while cameras flashed around the arena.

His tag team partner, Kane, weighing a massive 147kg, was a crowd favourite, and his arrival was greeted with whistles and shouts of joy.

The pair’s opponents, Wade Barrett and Sheamus, were far less welcome: every time Kane and Jackson got the upper hand, the audience cheered; when they fell on tough times, the crowd booed.

All ended well for Kane and Jackson’s fans, as the pair emerged victorious, leaving the ring 15 minutes after their match started to cheers of “Kane! Kane! Kane!”

Wrestler Jindra Mahal infuriated the crowd when he grabbed the announcer’s microphone and referred to South Africa as a “miserable country”. When he won his match against Daniel Brian, the crowd booed.

Cape Town-born Justin Gabriel was well received when he squared up against Sin Cara. Their bout became a tag team match after it was interrupted by Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. Gabriel and Cara won, much to the delight of the crowd.

The Superstars return to the ring at the Grand Arena tonight. – Cape Argus
