| 411mania.com’s Superstar Highlight – Christian | 11th Jul, 2010 |
David Martell: I have always been a fan of Christian even when he was being a whiney brat feuding with DDP. He has a ton of charisma, great on the mic and is a pretty solid wrestler. I would even go as far as saying he is a better wrestler than Edge. It is a shame that he hasn’t had a WWE world title in his career. I actually enjoyed the interactions between him and Matt Hardy a few weeks ago on Smackdown because they told the truth in that segment. Christian is one of those guys who has been over looked many times and it seems to be happening again. I am hoping that their promo is the start of something big. Christian was a great ECW champion, I don’t see why he couldn’t be a great World Champion. I am hoping that what we saw on Smackdown this past week was a heel turn. Christian has always been better as a heel. Face Christian just doesn’t seem right to me much like a face Triple H and a face Chris Jericho. He is a natural heel and WWE should play to his strengths. Overall, he is probably one of the hardest working guys in the WWE today and definitely deserving of some kind of title reign in the near future. Currently, I think Christian is being underutilized on Smackdown. He’s stuck in some garbage feud with Matt Hardy and Dolph Ziggler, and I really can’t seem to care about it. I don’t blame it on Christian so much as I do Hardy, but it’s really just disappointing to see such a valuable asset to the WWE being used for such uninteresting pursuits. I’m still hanging on to the hope that we might see him get a main event push soon. I’d love to see matches between Christian and Swagger again. Zach Brown: Christian is one of my favorite wrestlers working today. He was great when he was with Edge, and I often thought he was the better of the two, and was more deserving of a push. And while his “peep” persona was a little Rock-inspired, he made it his own and it was downright hilarious. When he got to TNA, he was hot shit, plain and simple. He won the belt, and he finally got to be the face of a company. He finally got to express himself in the main event in a way that he clearly had always wanted to. Back in the ‘05-‘07 period, TNA was very good at giving wrestlers undefeated streaks. They made Samoa Joe look great with an undefeated streak, and Christian was no exception. I still have Christian’s TNA shirt that looks like a coming attractions poster. It says “Never Pinned, Never Submitted, Never Beaten.” That is an awesome statement to put on your shirt no matter who you are. And to think, he had that streak for such a long time in TNA. The Instant Classic gimmick was hilarious, and the best thing going on in TNA at that point in time. And the Christian Coalition was complete gold, all thanks to Christian’s great ability to cut a heel promo and be funny backstage. However, when Angle came into the company, he looked a little paltry by comparison. At the point when Christian came to TNA, he was their biggest acquisition by far. But who can really compare to Kurt Angle? About a year into Angle being in TNA, Christian started to feel like old news. When Christian was leaving TNA to go to WWE, it was bittersweet, but ultimately the right decision. Christian’s heart just wasn’t in TNA anymore, and TNA was moving on to other things anyway. When Christian got to WWE again, I thought they were booking him all wrong. In his time in TNA, he was built up to be a great main event talent. And yet he returned to WWE by randomly joining the ECW roster with extremely little fanfare. Hell, when Jericho came back, it was teased for months, and the buildup was epic. Why couldn’t WWE have done something similar for Christian? It was a huge missed opportunity in my opinion. Thankfully, the mis-booking was not to last. Ever since they gave the ECW belt to Christian, he has been booked very well ever since. I’m really pulling for this to be the year that Christian finally wins a world title. Hell, WWE even acknowledged that Christian hasn’t won one yet in his recent promo with Matt Hardy. Maybe it really will happen. Until then, I’ll be pulling for the guy because I think he is one of the most underrated talents in the business. |
