IGN.com: Top 20 Summerslam Matches10th Sep, 2009

With Summerslam passing us by, I thought it would be an opportune time to look back at the last two decades worth of sizzling summer action and hand pick my favorites out for ya. Yes, much like my Top 25 Wrestlemania Matches, this list is sure to infuriate and frustrate y’all to the point of exhaustion. I will say that Summerslam, one of the original “Big 4″ WWE PPVs, is just as hit-or-miss as Wrestlemania. There are some great matches, but there’s also a ton of bunk and filler. People don’t often think back to Summerslam having “classic” matches, but when they do they come to realize that the great matches that have come out of this August supercard tend to spotlight a different slate of performers; Bret Hart, Mick Foley, HBK and Kurt Angle all managed to take this big show and make it their own.

#3 – Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boys vs. Edge and Christian – Summerslam 2000

This is, yet, another “next verse same as the first” match at Summerslam, trying to capture the glory of the triple Tag Team ladder match that wowed the fans at ‘Mania 2000. But this time, like the Owen/Bret match, they upped the ante and decided that, since Ladder Matches are anything goes anyways, that they should just make it a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match – the idea being that each team gets their “weapon/object of choice;” The tables for The Dudleys, the ladders for The Hardyz, and the chairs for Edge and Christian.

They perfected this formula at the next ‘Mania with TLC II, but this was definitely a great way to show the beautiful chaos and destruction of the Tag Team division. It’s interesting to see that the WWE Tag Division was at its strongest when they forsook teamwork and cohesive technical skill with no holds barred brawling and death-defying high-risk moves. Edge and Christian picked up their second win (out of their clean sweep of the series) to prove once again that they were the masters of the entire universe. Eat it, He-Man!

That’s right. I said it. IGN doesn’t shy away from controversy.
